A Global Network for Ocean Literacy in Action

Launched as a global initiative following the Ocean Literacy World Conference in Venice in June 2024, the Blue Thread recognizes and celebrates individuals, organizations, and businesses that actively promote the principles of the Venice Declaration for Ocean Literacy. The Blue Thread serves as a symbol of commitment to sustainable ocean stewardship, inclusive participation, and innovative approaches to solving ocean-related challenges.

This global network aims to connect those whose work is aligned with the principles of the Venice Declaration and fosters collaboration to amplify the impact of Ocean Literacy efforts around the world. By displaying the Blue Thread label, members showcase their dedication to environmental sustainability, ocean health, and fostering a deeper understanding of our vital connections to the marine world.

The Blue Thread is part of the SEA BEYOND project conducted by UNESCO-IOC together with Prada Group since 2019 to raise awareness of sustainability and ocean preservation.

Ocean Literacy in Action for a Sustainable Future

The Venice Declaration

The Venice Declaration for Ocean Literacy in Action, endorsed in June 2024 at the first Ocean Literacy World Conference, outlines a vision to restore humanity’s relationship with the ocean. It calls for comprehensive actions to improve public understanding of the ocean’s vital role in sustaining life on Earth. By integrating ocean literacy into policy, education, and community engagement, the Declaration seeks to empower individuals and governments alike to protect marine ecosystems and promote sustainable ocean economies.

Key areas of action include fostering participation in coastal and urban planning, safeguarding marine cultural heritage, supporting indigenous and local communities, and creating inclusive, accessible educational frameworks. The Declaration aims to help shape the agenda at the next United Nations Ocean Conference in Nice 2025, urging stakeholders to prioritize ocean literacy on the global stage.

About Us

UNESCO-IOC
Ocean Literacy Program

The UNESCO Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) leads international efforts to enhance ocean literacy and foster a deeper understanding of the ocean’s importance to life on Earth. Through the Ocean Literacy Program, UNESCO-IOC promotes educational initiatives, public engagement, and policy advocacy aimed at restoring and preserving marine ecosystems. The Blue Thread initiative is one of many projects under this umbrella, designed to drive the principles of ocean literacy forward in alignment with the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021–2030).

SEA BEYOND is a project by Prada Group conducted in partnership with the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO (UNESCO-IOC) since 2019 to raise awareness of sustainability and ocean preservation, contributing to the progress of ocean education on a global scale through a series of training initiatives for younger generations.
